When your teeth sustain damage, your oral health and comfort could be in jeopardy. Fractures, acute pain, and possible tooth loss can occur if you don’t treat a structurally unsound tooth. Dr. Van Wicklen offers one-visit, all-porcelain CEREC crowns, as well as lab-fabricated metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.
All Ceramic Crowns
All-ceramic crowns are usually recommended for teeth that show when you smile.
Traditionally, patients had to attend two visits for a dental crown: one for design, one for placement. Between the visits, a lab fabricated the crown. With CEREC one-visit crowns, Dr. Van Wicklen can design, fabricate, and secure a custom crown, inlay, or onlay in one visit.
Metal Crowns
Research tells us, while the human bite usually exerts around 50 lbs. of pressure, in the back of the mouth, the bite can be as powerful as 200 lbs. This significant force would crush all-porcelain crowns, so for molars, Dr. Van Wicklen recommends all-metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia crowns. These lab-made restorations require two visits for proper design and placement.
Inlays and Onlays
In some cases, a tooth incurs damage that doesn’t need a crown, but is too severe for a filling to correct. Inlays and onlays provide a happy medium. These partial crowns are stronger than fillings, but they’re milled from solid ceramic or metal, which makes them stronger than fillings. Inlays fit between the cusps (bumps) on top of a tooth; onlays fit over one cusp and down the side of a tooth.
